The Haunt, Brighton
Artists watched: Art Brut
My first Art Brut show in 4 years, 3 months, 2 weeks and 1 day. (That was an attempt to channel Emily Kane, but I quite liked the way it actually came out at 4-3-2-1) ...
The band have recently released their first album in seven years, Wham! Bang! Pow! Let's Rock Out! - and it's their best one since their debut back in 2005. Apart from grazing the top 40 when indie records still were hits (up to about 2006), they've never bothered the charts and that's always amazed me because I've found their tunes to be great and their lyrics brilliantly intelligent. Maybe people just don't like the way Eddie Argos rambles over the songs? If you like Art Brut, that's the best bit of course.
We drove down to Brighton and got there quite late, just in time to catch the start of the set but way back at the back with no hope of glimpsing the stage. Luckily we headed upstairs and FOUND A GAP so we managed to perch ourselves with a view of the band for pretty much the whole show. And that's something I really like when I go to gigs ...
There was a big smattering of songs from the new album and Eddie was on good form. Modern Art just keeps getting longer and longer too, which is a good barometer of how much the band are enjoying themselves.
Apparently These Animal Menswear featured Alexander Boag from These Animal Men on guitar. I didn't notice - he probably said something and I mistook it for more rambling. I'm not good with faces so a guitarist could replace another one on stage and I wouldn't even notice. Also, Bad Weekend segued into the Edgar Broughton Band hippy classic Out Demons, Out! and I have no idea why.
