Ticket for the Cardigans

It's been a long, long time since I saw the Cardigans live. 22 years and 16 days to be precise.

The band have long stopped producing new material - their last album, Super Extra Gravity, was released in 2005. They still play a smattering gigs around the world each year but I'm guessing they just go where the money takes them (and why not) as you see the odd appearance in Russia, Japan etc. But this time they've got a UK tour!

The last time I saw a Cardigans gig they were touring First Band On The Moon, which still remains one of my favourite albums from anyone, ever. This show and mini-tour (six dates I think) was set up to promote the 20th anniversary of Gran Turismo, which came out in October 1998. It's probably my least favourite album and the one of theirs I have played the least - but it's still got many good tracks on it.

Hammersmith Odeon

Hammersmith Odeon. Sorry, it's never going to be the Eventim Apollo to me.

I am long past the stage where I need to know all the songs a band plays live so I was happy to sit back and take it all.

I was really pleased, however, to see a big smattering of songs from Super Extra Gravity and the album before it, 2003's Long Gone Before Daylight - I wouldn't have thought the band would have visited those two much, but they are both great works in their own right. And LGBD almost makes me admit I like country-tinged rock, which I will never admit.

Highlights for me were probably I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to Be Nicer, which obviously I've never seen live before - it's just such a perfect pop song. And Iron Man! So much better than the original ...

This photo wasn't one of mine. I was up at the front of the balcony, which I was quite happy with, so thanks to whoever took this.

Support was from Moto Boy, a Swedish trio led by Oskar Humiebo who also plays for the Cardigans' live shows, having replaced founding member Peter Svensson on guitar duties.
