Portland Arms, Cambridge
Artists watched: Piroshka, Lemondaze
Ticket no 3 - not bad, eh
My first time seeing Piroshka live, and I've chosen Cambridge for some reason. I think the reason was that the London gig was in Oslo in Hackney, and as that's where I caught Lush's comeback show I wanted to see them in a different place. But this is no Lush, as I'll explain later ...
I got there nice and early though so had a walk along the river just before it got dark.
The Portland Arms isn't a bad venue IF you get there early and perch yourself near the front. Otherwise, it's just the backs of everyone else's heads. I managed to perch myself up at the front. As you'll see from the photos and videos, perhaps a bit too near.
Support was from local shoegaze band Lemondaze who had some pretty good tunes.
Piroshka are fronted by former Lush singer Miki Berenyi (vocals/guitar) and also include former Moose guitarist KJ "Moose" McKillop, Modern English bassist Mick Conroy and former Elastica (and Lush Mk II) drummer Justin Welch.
They're very much their own band though, not sounding particularly like Lush (apart from Miki's voice being on both, of course) but having a great canon of tunes already in Brickbat, their debut album which was released in February 2019.
The tracks were sounding particularly good on the live stage tonight and I'm pretty sure that they're the only 12 tracks that the band has recorded, so that pretty much made up the setlist - apart from It's Obvious, an Au Pairs cover, which acted as the band's sole encore track.
