Artists watched: Republica, All Tomorrow's Stories, Saint Nevis
Hard to believe it but this was my first Republica gig for nearly 6 years. They have played a couple each year in the meantime but it's never been possible or convenient for me to go. Saffron invited me to the Chelmsford gig they played just before Christmas and I couldn't make that one either, so I had to make doubly sure I made this one. And she guestlisted me too which was really nice - and I managed to pick up someone else's ticket that was scrunched up on the floor as soon as I got in ...
They had a very ambitious four support bands and I managed to get there early(ish) to see the whole set from two of them, Saint Nevis and All Tomorrow's Stories, both of whom were pretty good.
It's been over 20 years since I first saw Republica (at V98!) and they just seem to be ageless. They're always very tight live, and Saffron's voice is still really powerful and hitting the right spots at the right times. It was one of the best performances of theirs that I can remember.
Without coming over as too much of a dick, I'd also like to state for the record that she saw me at the front and stroked my face while singing the chorus to Drop Dead Gorgeous. Yeah, there's no way I can say that without coming over as too much of a dick.
Hopefully they'll play again later this year as their long-awaited third album is apparently going to see the light of day later this year. I'm definitely not going to leave it 6 years until the next one.
