The Good, The Bad and The Queen

Somerset House, London
Artists watched: Good The Bad and The Queen
A band I never thought I would see live after hearing their first album, despite my well-documented love of Blur *and* the Clash.
However the band's excellent 2018 album Merrie Land changed all that, and I snapped up these tickets when I went on sale. It was a good opportunity to see a gig at Somerset House too, which I had been wanting to do for some time.
And since it was a rare trip into central London for me, a good excuse to visit The Maple Leaf in Covent Garden for the best poutine outside Canada, and possibly the best poutine with Canada included too! And Sleeman's on tap!
Somerset House is a great place to see a gig but I wonder how many corporate tickets they gave away because there were just SO MANY PEOPLE TALKING during the music. A friend of mine who was there the previous day said exactly the same thing.
On paper, a band with members of Blur and the Clash (not to mention The Verve and one of the world's best Afrobeat drummers) should be a no-brainer, but I just couldn't get into their 2009 debut album.
Merrie Land was a different kettle of fish - Damon Albarn described it as a continuation of Modern Life Is Rubbish, and while Graham Coxon and Stephen Street's magic was missing from it, it's still a fantastic piece of work and I can see where he's coming from.
Most of both albums were played tonight - and a wonderful performance from the North Wales male voice choir too. Fantastic evening!
The gig may well be my first and last chance to catch them live - at the end of the tour, they went on record to say they wouldn't be doing any more music together. But never say never ...
(It would be a shame if there was no TGTB&TQ but if it meant a new Blur record ...)
